During the early 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century he studied philosophy and legal sciences at the University of Erfurt until he began his theological education at St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery during 1505. 1507 he was ordained as a priest at the Cathedral of St. Marien in Erfurt. Many places in Erfurt and its surroundings were stations in Luther\u2019s life and are destinations for many tourists and ecumenical pilgrims every year.<\/p>\n<p>Go on a journey, starting from St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery and visit the most important waypoints of Martin Luther in Thuringia\u2019s capital and its surroundings. A lot of Luther sites are within walking distance from St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery.<\/p>\n<h3>Luther Trail<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"The Luther Trail in Thuringia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lutherweg.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Luther Trail<\/a>\u00a0is a pilgrim and hiking trail for all those who are interested in Luther\u2019s work and his path of life. In Thuringia it leads along more than 30 sites of the Protestant Reformation which are connected to Luther and his companions. In Erfurt, St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery is the central juncture of the Luther Trail. From here you can follow many different routes. These lead from the historic city to the city borders and make 60 kilometers of the route. Guided tours aren\u2019t a possibility but it\u2019s easy to explore the Luther Trail on your own since there are certain \u201cL\u201d-markings that lead the way and with which you can go on a longer hike along Luther\u2019s trails.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1657\" style=\"width: 886px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1657\" src=\"http:\/\/augustinerkloster.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Lutherweg.jpg\" alt=\"Lutherweg\" width=\"876\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luther Trail<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Collegium Maius<\/h3>\n<p>The main building of the former University of Erfurt, the\u00a0<a title=\"Collegium maius in Erfurt\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collegium_Maius_(Erfurt)\" target=\"_blank\">Collegium maius<\/a>, is located across from Michael\u2019s Church which you can reach within a five minute walk, starting at St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery. Here Luther began his studies at the Faculty of Arts during 1501 and studied\u00a0 legal sciences for a few months during 1505. The building was completely reconstructed after its destruction in 1945 and is used by the\u00a0<a title=\"Evangelical Church in Central German\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ekmd.de\/service\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\">Evangelical Church in Central Germany<\/a>\u00a0 since 2011.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1654\" style=\"width: 886px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1654\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1654\" src=\"http:\/\/augustinerkloster.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Collegium-Maius.jpg\" alt=\"Collegium Maius\" width=\"876\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Collegium Maius<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Georgenburse<\/h3>\n<p>During his studies Luther lived in the so called\u00a0<a title=\"Georgenburse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.augustinerkloster.de\/luther-georgenburse-erfurt\/\">\u201eGeorgenburse\u201c<\/a>, a home for students and teachers of the University of Erfurt. It is located at the Lehmannsbr\u00fccke next to St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery and can be reached quickly. Today it is a place to meet and be educated at. Furthermore, the attic contains a pilgrims refuge and the ground floor a permanent exhibition about Luther\u2019s studies during the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<h3>St. Michael&#8217;s Church<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"St. Michael\u2019s Church in Erfurt\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michaeliskirche_(Erfurt)\" target=\"_blank\">St. Michael\u2019s Church<\/a>\u00a0is found in Michaelisstra\u00dfe and can be reached within five minutes from St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery. Luther attended the services at Michael\u2019s Church next to the former University of Erfurt regularly. Years later there were reformatory riots during a parish fair. During 1521 the first Protestant sermon of Erfurt was held at St. Michael\u2019s Church. A few years later the first Protestant supper and the first wedding of a priest took place there as well<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1652\" style=\"width: 886px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1652\" class=\"wp-image-1652 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/augustinerkloster.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Michaeliskirche.jpg\" alt=\"Michaeliskirche\" width=\"876\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michaels Church<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Lutherstein<\/h3>\n<p>If you follow the Luther Trail and head north for about 10 kilometers you get to the\u00a0<a title=\"Lutherstein near Erfurt\" href=\"https:\/\/www.erfurt-tourismus.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lutherstein<\/a>\u00a0next to the Luthersee in Stotternheim. The Lutherstein marks the place where legend has it that in 1505 Luther was caught off guard by a thunderstorm and vowed to Saint Anna that he wants to become a monk. After this incident Luther began his theological education at St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery. That is the reason why the Lutherstein marks a turning point of the Protestant Reformation. A green area with benches and a shelter surround the Lutherstein and invite guests to linger.<\/p>\n<h3>St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery<\/h3>\n<p>Build around 1300 the\u00a0<a title=\"Protestant Monastery of St. Augustine in Erfurt\" href=\"http:\/\/www.augustinerkloster.de\/en\/\">Protestant Monastery of St. Augustine<\/a>\u00a0was part of one of the most important phases of Martin Luther\u2019s path of life. On July 17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a01505 he joined the monastery and became an Augustinian monk. Only two years later he was ordained as a deacon. Today St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery is an ecumenical event and meeting center and is used as a shelter for those who want to walk along the Ecumenical Pilgrim Path. Furthermore, there is a permanent exhibition BIBLE-MONASTERY-LUTHER (\u201cBIBEL-KLOSTER-LUTHER\u201d). Luther\u2019s cell, where he lived during his time at the Monastery, can be visited as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Dom St. Marien<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"Cathedral of St. Mary in Erfurt\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dom-erfurt.de\/index.php?article_id=23\" target=\"_blank\">Cathedral of St. Mary<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cDom St. Marien\u201d) is only a 10-minute walk away from St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery and is more than 1.200 years old. It is one of the many landmarks of Erfurt and is located next to the parish church St. Severi at the Domberg. The latter can be reached if you climb up 70 steps. Since 1994 the cathedral is the cathedral of the diocese of Erfurt. Not only the high Gothic choir, the magnificent choir windows or the Romanesque sculptures are worth visiting but also the largest free-swinging bell in the world \u201cGloriosa\u201d inside the cathedral tower.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1655\" style=\"width: 886px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1655\" class=\"wp-image-1655 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augustinerkloster.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Dom-St.-Marien.jpg\" alt=\"Dom St. Marien und Pfarrkirche St. Severi \" width=\"876\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cathedral of St. Mary and Parish Church St. Severi<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Kaufmannskirche St. Gregorius<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"Merchant\u2019s Church St. Gregorius in Erfurt\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaufmannskirche_(Erfurt)\" target=\"_blank\">Merchant\u2019s Church St. Gregorius<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cKaufmannskirche Erfurt\u201d) is located at the Anger, one of the central places of Erfurt and only a 10-minute walk away from St. Augustine\u2019s Monastery. It is one of the oldest parish churches in Erfurt and the only church with two towers. 1522, during the Protestant Reformation, Luther preached at the Merchant\u2019s Church \u201cVom Kreuz und Leiden eines Christenmenschen\u201d \u2013 the suffering of a Christian. In remembrance of this important sermon, pulpit, font and altar were equipped with pictures of the Lutheran doctrine during the 17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century. Moreover, a memorial stone in cross shape was installed at the outer church wall and in front of the church a Luther memorial was built.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1656\" style=\"width: 886px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1656\" class=\"wp-image-1656 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augustinerkloster.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaufmannskirche-Luther.jpg\" alt=\"Luther memorial in front of the Merchant\u2019s Church\" width=\"876\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luther memorial in front of the Merchant\u2019s Church<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Barf\u00fc\u00dferkirche<\/h3>\n<p>During the Protestant Reformation Martin Luther preached at the so called\u00a0<a title=\"Barf\u00fc\u00dferkirche in Erfurt\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barf%C3%BC%C3%9Ferkirche_(Erfurt)\" target=\"_blank\">\u201dBarf\u00fc\u00dferkirche\u201d<\/a>\u00a0as well. On his way to the Marburg Colloquy during October 1529 Luther visited Erfurt, the city where he had studied and joined a monastery, and preached a sermon at the Barf\u00fc\u00dferkirche on October 11<sup>th<\/sup>. This church was one of the most beautiful mendicant churches up until its destruction during World War II. There are still theatrical performances happening inside the ruin. Because of the war it was only transported to Jena where it is stored inside the St. Michael\u2019s Church.
