Historical library

The Library of the Evangelical Ministry

In 1646, the library was set up as a foundation by Evangelical parish priests. Its function was to act as a consulting body for the Evangelical ministry. The aim to provide a theological service library with a universal orientation has characterized the acquisitions for over 300 years. In the 18th and 19th centuries, gifts from private people increased the number of these books rapidly. At present, the stock comprises of approx. 60,000 volumes and is one of the most important church book-collections in Germany.

Among the almost 13,000 handwritten manuscripts and prints which were created before 1850 are the incunabula, and the reformation documents, especially the publications by Martin Luther (Lutherausgaben).
Today the library as a scientific facility is available for research without any restrictions. The books are indexed in both alphabetical and subject catalogues and can be read in the reading room.

It is possible to loan books which were published after 1900. The library is part of the church lending network.
